Kapata Dreaming was created by Maddy Hodgetts, a Ngiyampaa/Wiradjuri artist, with a passion for creating artwork that reflects her culture, her language, her kinship and her Ngurrampaa (country). Her artwork can depict stories that include cultural morals and values. These stories can teach us about our relationships and obligation to Mother Earth as well as every living and non living thing in the universe. It is important to Maddy, that she continues the practices of her Ancestors and gives back to her Ngurrampaa.

Title: Nganira - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2020/ Nganira is a Ngiyampaa word meaning lightness in night sky before sun or moon rise. This artwork depicts the shades and shapes of that lightness before sun rise. This is the same time the Kookaburra announces the arrival of the sun with his laughter, to awaken all the sleepers.)

Title: Waway - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2019/ As an aboriginal person our values and our culture manifests as a story, seen in the land and depicted in our art, songs and dances. This piece tells the story of new life and connection as the rainbow serpent travels and makes country. At some places he travels underground and comes up at a spring or waterhole which is represented by the circles, he also makes the creeks and rivers. The rainbow serpent gives life to a countless number of things, in a countless number of different ways, this is the interconnectedness, the circle of life, birth, death and rebirth. The unseen to this story is our relationships and obligation to mother earth and everything living and non-living in the universe. Title: Mama Galaydjan - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2020/ This piece was painted for my beautiful sis. It shows us on our journey learning culture together and united as women. The title is related to Ngiyambaa kinship and our relationship to one another. Symbols within the artwork depict things relating to women and our stories. Our Ganais (digging sticks) are placed next to us, which shows us making these together. The small circles depict the shapes on the angophora trees. Lastly the Emu footprints are shown travelling which represents us following and learning stories together. The lines connect us together as a pair (Mama-Galaydjan) and also connect us to Mother Earth as one.)
Title: Gunni Thakun - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2018 / This piece represents Mother Earth (Gunni Thakun). The Earth provides for our people so through our culture we sustain the Earth. From cultural knowledge we learn our obligations and responsibilities to caring for the land which creates the interconnection amongst all living and non-living things.The Earth is our Mother and we are apart of the Earth)
Title: Ngurruy Yanawana - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2020/ This piece tells the story of connection and learning as the emu travels. The emu is important in many women’s stories in our culture. She is not travelling to get somewhere; she is walking to learn and connect with country as our old people guide her. Learning culture is about humility, respect and patience. Humility involves humbling oneself as a learner when it comes to understanding culture. Approach learning about culture as a lifelong goal and process, you never stop learning. Respect involves acknowledging our elders and teachers but also giving back to country to show appreciation to our ancestors. It is important that we try to recreate these morals and stories through our art, songs and dance. So that we can maintain and continue our culture whilst keeping our own personal connection, which allows us to live these morals through our daily life. Title: Ngurra - Artist: Maddy Hodgetts (2019/ Ngurra means home or camp in Ngiyampaa. This artwork depicts the connection we have to one another and to our country. As an Aboriginal person we naturally long for connection to our land and our culture, without this it affects not only our health and well-being but the sustainability of the earth we live on. Strong culture and identity help develop resilience and power within our community. From cultural knowledge we learn our obligations and responsibility to caring for the land which creates the interconnection amongst all living and non-living things.
