Kiya Watt - Aborginal Artist

I am a Menang Gnudju Noongar. I started painting for my children as a way to connect back to my culture. Through painting I have reconnected with my family learnt my stories and now use my platform to raise awareness about the issues affecting my mob today. Art is so much more then paintings for Aborginal people it is our lifeline it is how we connect as A community and share and preserve our stories by keeping our traditions alive. Title: Wagual (Rainbow Serpent) - Artist: Kiya Watt (We believed the wagual rainbow serpent created the lands and oceans by moving across the world he was a huge spiritual being with rainbow skin. Title: Two Brothers - Artist: Kiya Watt (2 brothers were fighting at ceremony so an elder sent them to Torgadirrup on Menang country They were sent to each side of the gap where they had to fight to the death. One brother was armed with a boomerang whilst the other a spear. The brothers threw their weapons but as they threw them they fell into the water. The spear launched onto one brother and he became a sting ray. Whilst the boomerang got the other brother and he became a shark. This picture shows the 2 brothers now. Title: Karda dreaming - Artist: Kiya Watt (Karda The karda (lizard) has strong cultural ties to Noongah Boodjah. The women in my tribe would cook them whilst it was the mens responsibility to hunt for Daadja (meat) which included the Karda. I have tried to capture the long journey of the karda as he stops by water holes for drink and continues on far across Noongah boodjah.
