Truth seeking and story telling inform Trawlwoolway artist Julie Gough's inspiration and process. Working predominantly in sculpture, video and installation, she locates and reconfigures often fragmented histories from her family, the archives, and Country itself into retellings of episodes from across Lutruwita (Tasmania), particularly from the darkest colonial times. Materially drawn to found materials that hold their own history, both human made and natural, Julie also makes cultural objects that speak to both loss and resilience; combining these with other technologies she affirms the importance of remembering while asserting the continuance of Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Julie's work is held in many private and public collections including The National Gallery of Australia, The National Gallery of Victoria, The Art Gallery of New South Wales, The Art Gallery of South Australia, The Art Gallery of West Australia, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, National Museum of Australia, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery Launceston.
