Ashleigh Darrie

Ashleigh is an Aboriginal-Australian artist based in Victor Harbor, South Australia whom founded Frenetic Artistry in early 2017, changing direction to show under 'Ashleigh Darrie - Aboriginal Artist' in early 2019 as she grows to be known as an established young artist in her local area. Ashleigh specialises in traditional and modern Aboriginal and abstract art, and is currently a member of the Country Arts SA and Carclew Art Squad where she continues to further grow her skills in the industry. Title: The Drought is Over - Artist: Ashleigh Darrie (2019 / I’m 13. The water is back! It glistens far, from the barrage to the lake and everything is finally green! Tired smiles, like torn paper, rips across local faces as they stand ankle deep in the murky Murray. It’s 2010 but it feels like it’s been 100 years since the water last lapped the banks in Goolwa.)

I dream of growing a family and living in the little quiet town of Victor Harbor but I also dream of seeing what the world has to offer. I hope one day I can see the rolling hills of Machu Picchu and although it isn’t ‘my place,’ it’s a place the others call home. )
Title: Rivers Run Dry - Artist: Ashleigh Darrie (2019 / I’m 9. South-east Australia experienced its second driest year on record in 2006 and from 2001 to 2009, the peak of the millennial drought had come upon us and devastated thousands of people that lived along the Murray River. I remember living through this period strolling along the dry banks of the Murray, the drained river drained our souls and robbed us at times of the little hope we had for the glistening water to come back to us.)

I watch vision on the television of the Heirisson Island protest camp being evicted by forceful rangers and police on horses. ‘THAT IS THEIR PLACE’ I felt like I was screaming, there was nothing we could, sitting of the other side of the screen. I couldn’t believe this was happening in 2016. My heart ached for the Wajuk people as I sat out at the Bluff, looking over the sunset sky and waters with our creators.)
