Gumbaygnirr

My name is Caressa Murphy, I am a proud Gumbayngirr woman and artist. My mother is part of the stolen generation, so I grew up disconnected from family and Country. I navigated a path to cultural reconnection through my artistry. With a rich background in the Australian Fashion and Bridal industries, I established my label, Caressa, in 2009, later expanding into painting in 2010. Throughout my career, I've encountered both triumphs and challenges, particularly in shattering the glass ceiling within Australian fashion. In 2019, I made a strategic pivot towards children's clothing, driven by a passion to instill cultural pride from birth—an opportunity I yearned for in my own upbringing. Our garments serve as a tool for cultural learning, sharing, and respect, catering to both mob and allies. Currently, my focus lies in integrating my artistic vision into fabric, ensuring each piece embodies the essence of Caressa Designs.
As an Artist Member of Indigenous Art Code Ltd, I am adding my voice to the call for fair treatment for myself and for other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
