Merinda Walters is an Indigenous artist and environmental scientist living in FNQ. She is a proud Kamilaroi woman who creates contemporary Aboriginal art using acrylic paints. Her artworks reflect her passion for nature, and conservation, as well as her culture and connection to country. She runs her own business, Mindy’s Art Thawun Wandabaa, where she sells her original paintings and earrings to customers around the world. She aims to make a difference in her community and the world by sharing her culture and knowledge through art and science. Merinda was raised in Karumba, a small community in the Gulf of Carpentaria, where she learned about her culture and traditions from her family. She developed an interest in art at an early age and was inspired by the natural beauty of her surroundings, and the stories and symbols of her heritage. Merinda's art is a fusion of traditional and modern elements, combining the stylised patterns of Aboriginal art with vibrant colours. She paints on canvas and wood, and also makes earrings and digital designs. She uses her art as a way of expressing her identity, emotions, and beliefs, as well as raising awareness and appreciation for the environment and Indigenous culture.
