palawa
Kate Deane is a local emerging trawlwoolway/palawa artist, born in 2004. Kate grew up on the North West Coast, with strong maternal connections to her family who have been living in the area for generations. While Kate’s heritage traces to North East Tasmania, Kate draws inspiration across the state.
Kate’s family is known in her local community, with her paternal grandmother being a highly respected knowledge holder in Devonport. Kate continues her legacy through developing her artmaking since 2019, developing and refining her techniques.
Currently residing in nipaluna/Hobart, Kate makes art primarily using coloured pencils to convey contemporary palawa worldviews. Using observational and realistic styles, Kate elegantly explores themes of culture; depicting significant animals, plants, objects, and landscapes. This contemporary style of artmaking reflects the evolving nature of palawa culture, and conversely, the fragments of culture lost.
Kate draws on her skills from her scientific background, combined with subtle incorporations of symbolism and storytelling. She invites responders to gain insight into palawa culture and Country, through a contemporary lens.
